Word is, Jordin and Blake will be singing three songs each tonight: one new song of their choice; one they've previously performed; and one chosen from the "American Idol" songwriting contest. It's that last category that gives me pause. Remember the cheeseball ballads of seasons past? Everyone from Fantasia to Taylor "Soul Patrol!" Hicks has been saddled with one song after another having to do with pride, believing, dreams, blah, blah, and REALLY blah. We can only hope this year's introduction of a songwriting contest -- in place of the inspirational wet blankets commissioned from pro songwriters -- brought forth better material.

In the meantime, let's have a listen to Portland's own Morgan Grace, who won a songwriting competition back in August for "American Idol Underground," the "online community where emerging artists get their music heard and fans discover new music." Grace won a cool $10,000, and a CD pressing package. Go to Grace's MySpace page to hear her winning tune, "Rules of Dating."
