Jordin Sparks wins “American Idol”; finale show could lose a half hour or so

After some 74 million votes were cast, Jordin Sparks became the sixth “American Idol.”jordin2

Blake Lewis, the runner up, did his best to stay true to his unique style, but in the end, American went with the more traditional singer.

Overall, the finale was filled with decent performances, but could have easily slashed a half hour of stuff — like those dreadful Golden Idol Awards … do we really need to hear them talk? If they just trimmed those out, then the show wouldn’t have run overtime.

Here’s a run down of the good, bad and the desperate:

Gwen Stefani: Is it just me, or is she no longer hip?

Kelly Clarkson: She’s a star, but still seems “normal.”

Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight: Smooth as ever and classy as always.

Doug E. Fresh and Blake: Most unexpected and fun performance of the night.

Tony Bennett: Most endearing performer of the night. He’s 80!

Carrie Underwood: The only “Idol” who’s look screams out — STAR!

Melinda Doolittle and BeBe and CeCe Winans: Amazing how easily Melinda can be overshadowed.

African Children’s Choir: How can anyone not love hearing and watching them?

Sanjaya Malakar and Joe Perry (featuring The Crying Girl): Most inspired pairing. The wind blowing his hair was just classic.

Green Day: Hey, at least the sold out for a good cause — wanting to end violence in Darfur.

Ruben Studdard and Jordin Sparks: The big teddy bear sounded great and was maybe the only one able to make Jordin look petite.

Bette Midler: Huh? At least she sang “Wind Beneath My Wings,” a song that brought tears to Jerry Springer’s eyes.

Taylor Hicks: That guy won last year?

What was your favorite part of the show?
