American Idol finalists had a change to visit their hometowns and meet their fans.
Melinda Doolittle, 29, arrived to her hometown on a white Mustang. She is a professional singer now, but before that she has been the mascot of Belmont University in Tennessee. She wore sweaty bear costume at that times and made her university lucky.
Now she’s back to university and she’s happy, because everyone is glad to see her and almost everyone had a sign with words such as “We love you, Melinda.” “You’re going to win, Melinda.” “Doolittle’s Da Bomb.” “Melinda for President.”
They have even named a street after her: a blue sign says “Melinda Doolittle Way.” That excited Melinda very much.
“If I talk too much I’ll cry,” she said. “You have no idea how much this means to me. … This is probably one of the most amazing things I’ve ever experienced.”
Melinda’s mother told that she had no voice till sixth grade, she was almost unable to sing a song, but in seventh grade she suddenly started singing.
“God really dropped a voice into her in the seventh grade,” her mother said. “It’s been so exciting watching this, because it was not there before. It’s like seeing a miracle, really.”
Blake Lewis visited Seattle and gave a free concert for thousands of her fans. Most of his fans were teen girls with sign like “Blaker Girls”, “We (heart) Blake.” On the stage Seattle’s Sir Mix-A-Lot joined Blake and sang his “Baby Got Back”.
“Every time you watch American Idol, you see people that can sing, and that’s it,” Mix-A-Lot said. “This cat got real talent. … He’s the new king of Sea-town, baby.”
Blake Hometown visit also included a parade to Seattle’s suburban Bothell and a performance during Mariners-Yankees game. “I’m speechless. Thank you guys for all the support,” said Blake. City Councilwoman Jean Godden declared Friday “Blake Lewis Day”.
Jordin Sparks, 17, arrived to Glendale, Ariz on a pink Mustang. It was 100 degrees hot there, but it didn’t make any sense for her fans. They needed to five hours to see her. “You guys are crazy but I love you for it,”
She performed “Give Me One Reason,” “Heartbreaker” and “I Who Have Nothing” for her hometown fans and said “I hope I make you proud next Tuesday.”
American Idol fans had a great chance to meet their beloved finalists and got lot of energy and enthusiasm to give their deciding votes to them.
