"American Idol" announces its plan for a band version

The promo Wednesday night during "American Idol" hinted that a new show was coming. Fox released details Thursday morning.

The show: "The Search for the Next Great American Band." (That's a working title.)

Think "American Idol" for bands. Fox said the new show is looking for groups "of all ages, styles and genres." The candidates will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists who will perform before a studio audience. Viewers will vote by phone and text messaging.

The prize: a recording contract.

Fox teased, "If you think 'American Idol' is intense, wait until you see what a band must go through for its shot at fame."

No premiere date was announced.
