1. LaKisha is gone. Not a big surprise; but I’m glad she went out in a blaze of glory. She looked lovely last night. Once again the person booted off performed a song about being a loser.
2. At least Blake dressed for the formal occasion.
3. Barry Gibb? Make it stop. The AI Powers That Be need to do away with the guest mentors next year; or at the very least they should choose the themes first, and then find celebrities willing to come on AI to mentor the kids. When They just pick the first ones willing to come on AI, we get theme nights like “Songs That Maybe at One Time Sort of Kinda Influenced Gwen Stefani and No Doubt. Oh, and Donna Summer Songs.”
This week, alledgedly, it’s the week that the contestants pick a song, the judges pick a song, and the svengali-like Clive Davis picks a song. We know Clive’s going to be all about the Celine for Jordin. You can just feel it. Here are some other songs I’d like to hear in the semi-finals (Some of these songs I’ve mentioned over and over again for two seasons, but I’ve yet to hear them performed on the Idol stage. Come on, ABBA. Give that permission already):
Blake: “I’m Not in Love” by 10 cc; “I Miss You” by Bjork; “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard; “Romeo and Juliet” by Dire Straits; “Ordinary World” by Duran Duran (but he’d need to bring back the Simon Le Bon hair); “Always” by Erasure; “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand; “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap; “Twentysomething” by Jamie Cullum; “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers
Jordin: “You’ve Got a Friend” by Carole King; “It Must Have Been Love” by Roxette; “To Love You More” by Celine Dion (yes, I went there); “So Young Now” by The Corrs; “Lost in Your Eyes” by Debbie Gibson; “More Than Words” by Extreme; “I Want to Know What Love Is” by Foreigner; “Gloria” by Laura Branigan
Melinda: “Make Your Own Kind of Music” by Cass Elliot; “Winner Takes It All” by ABBA; “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues” by Elton John; “(I’ve Really Got to Use) My Imagination” by Gladys Knight and the Pips; “Shadowboxer” by Fiona Apple; “Sit Down” by James; “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor; “Plush” by Stone Temple Pilots
What do you want to hear from the contestants this week? What song have you never heard on AI that you’ve been just losing sleep over?
