Sparks the brightest on American Idol

17-year-old Jordin Sparks has become the youngest ever winner of 'American Idol'.

The Arizona native saw off the challenge of fellow finalist Blake Lewis, with a record 74m telephone votes cast by the American public.

Before the final, judge Simon Cowell had said that the title was up for grabs but on Tuesday night's show he told Sparks that she had "wiped the floor" with Lewis.

When it was announced that she had won on last night's results show, Sparks said: "Thank you so much for everything - Mom and Dad, I love you!"

Backstage after the show, the unfazed teenager said: "It just turned out pretty cool, I guess."

Speaking to reporters, beaten finalist Lewis said that even a few weeks ago he thought that Sparks would be the winner.

"I feel great," he said. "I was trying to wear a 'Vote for Jordin Sparks' T-shirt last night but they wouldn't let me."

Sparks now receives a major recording contract with many believing that a glittering career lies ahead.

Soul legend Smokey Robinson, who was at last night's show, told reporters: "She sings so good it's hard to believe that she's 17. To sing like that you would have to have lived for a long time.
