Like the Grammys and Oscars, "American Idol" is turning more and more into an event every year.
Most TV shows don't call for a finale party, but "AI" is perfect for one. It's pretty simple to have your own.
First of all, decide if you want this to be a two- or one-night event. The show's final performances will take place on Tuesday, while the results will be announced Wednesday.
Set the scene with your own set (for the karaoke, which comes later). Snap up an "Idol" alum's CD for background music. Check local party supplies stores for "American Idol" favors and decorations.
Karaoke is a must at this party. If you don't have a karaoke machine, they're available to rent at most rental stores. Choose three friends to do their best imitations of judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell.
If no one wants to sing, there are "American Idol" video games that are fun as well.
The winner of either of these can win music-related prizes, like giftcards or CDs. You can also make your own CD of songs the Idols have sung this year. iTunes has a list of these songs in special "American Idol" playlists. If you don't want a "winner," you can give these away as souvenirs.
Although dreadful contestant Sanjaya Malakar is thankfully gone, you really can't celebrate the end of this year's season without having something Sanjaya-related.
If you know someone who's a good hairstylist, have them recreate Sanjaya's famous do's on your guests. After all, an "American Idol" party isn't complete without a horrendous pony hawk.
You'll need to feed your hungry guests. The simpler, the better. Make your usual party fare, but spice it up with Idol-ish names. Paula's Rambling Rotel, perhaps? Beatboxing B-b-buffalo W-w-wings, anyone? Tell-Sanjaya-to-Stuff-It Stuffed Mushrooms?
As with any good party, don't forget to snap photos as a reminder of the event.
