I still don't get all the fuss surrounding American Idol. Perhaps that's just because I tend agree with readers of Consumerist.com who voted the Recording Industry Association of America the worst company in America, and that being independent musician and using the Internet to build your fan base is far preferable to signing your life away to some huge corporation just to participate in some overhyped singing contest that tends to get hacked by haters.
Carolina Panthers tackle Jordan Gross? He's not quite as cynical as I am about American Idol. In fact, he's such an Idol fanboy that he's traveling with Charlotte Fox affiliate WCCB-TV to California to cover the show's season finale.
"It's going to be awesome," he said. "It's not as big as the Super Bowl, but it's kind of like going to the Super Bowl."
Except, of course, that Super Bowl winners actually get to keep the most of the money they make from the game...
"My wife and I have been watching it since the first season," Gross said. "You'd be amazed by how much `Idol' talk goes on in the (Panthers') weight room and locker room after the show. I guess I've got a loud enough opinion that it caught the attention of the guys on our Web site, and I sort of got the tag of being the `Idol' guy."
And who's the Idol guy rooting for?
"I've said from the beginning that Blake Lewis is my guy," Gross said. "I like that Blake brings something original to the table every week."
You know who else is rooting for Blake? The Vote for the Worst guys. This may say more about Gross' taste in music than I really wanted to know. Then again, I don't buy into this glorified karaoke contest. If I want karaoke, I'll just head down to Fat Daddy's in Raleigh on Sunday nights and join in myself, and let me tell you, I do a pretty mean version of the Stones' "Gimme Shelter."
