The grand finale, broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, sailed along fairly quickly and was entertaining. Like last year's extravaganza, the two-hour show included celebrity duets, solo star turns, fabulously cheesy group numbers and a few comedy skits. All of this led up to the big announcement, sprays of fireworks and the crowning of the winner amid a blizzard of confetti.
AND THE WINNER IS:
Jordin Sparks, 17, of Glendale Ariz. An overwhelmed Sparks tried to keep tears in check so she could belt out her coronation ballad, "This Is My Now," but ended up crying by the end of the song. You'd weep, too, if saddled with this saccharine signature tune by Jeff Peabody and Scott Krippayne.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Green Day's cover of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" was understated yet intense. Blake Lewis and Doug E. Fresh united for a beat-boxing duel that was energetic, hip-hoppy and ultra-cool. Kelly Clarkson sounded like a cross between Annie Lennox and Alanis Morissette as she presented a new original, "Never Again." Melinda Doolittle, who formerly sang backup for CeCe and BeBe Winans, was flanked by her former employers for a rousing gospel number, "Hold Up the Light."
LOWLIGHTS:
Bette Midler remains the Divine Miss M, but did they have to make her sing "Wind Beneath My Wings?" Talk about an eye-rolling "Idol" coronation ballad. Tony Bennett might be a jazz-pop icon, but he sounded more like a lounge singer on his sub-par rendition of "For Once in My Life." Kelly Clarkson flubbed the words to the opening of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." An obvious mistake, made worse by backup singers who sang the lyrics correctly. Bad, Kelly!
