Tuesday's "American Idol" topped the weekly ratings with a 7.5 while the Wednesday results show, which featured the elimination of both Chris Richardson and Phil Stacey, posted a 7.3 mark for second place. "American Idol" heads into the final leg of its season with just four contestants remaining.
ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" followed in third place with a 5.7 rating and "Desperate Housewives," another ABC offering, was fourth with a 5.5.
Two nights of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" finished fifth and sixth. Its Tuesday night results show drew a 5.3 and its Monday show earned a 4.9.
"Fea Mas Bella," the Univision telenovela juggernaut, has finally met its match. It was dethroned in the Hispanic TV ratings for Spanish-language programs last week by "Destilando Amor," the relatively new Univision telenovela that is gaining in popularity. The newcomer edged "Fea Mas Bella" by three-tenths of a point (23.5 vs. 23.2) in its five-night ratings average to obtain the top spot. More than 2.9 million Hispanic households tuned in to see Wednesday's "Destilando Amor" for a chart-topping 25.2 rating.
Wednesday's episode of "Don Francisco Presenta" on Univision placed third with a 16.8 rating. It was a strong week for Spanish-language programming with each of the top six programs earning at least a 16.5 rating.
Nielsen's figures, however, have their detractors. One group has started a petition, hoping Nielsen Media Group will change the way it samples the U.S. Hispanic population in its English and Spanish TV ratings. The Help Change TV group, which has a petition at www.HelpChangeTV.com, claims that Nielsen does not include enough U.S.-born Hispanics in its audience sample, leading to the impression that a vast majority of Hispanics watch Spanish-language TV.
The following lists are TV ratings based on Hispanic viewership. Nielsen's ratings include viewers who watched the program while it aired and others who viewed the shows via digital video recorder within 24 hours of their airing. The group says that the Hispanic TV audience represents more than 11.63 million television households in the United States. The rating is equivalent to the percentage of households or persons watching a TV program during the average minute.
