CBS, Fox on top, Round 2

We will end the 2006-07 televi sion season Wednesday night the same way we ended the 2005-06 season: with two network heavyweight champions. CBS has the most view ers, so it will claim one version of the ratings crown. Fox will claim to be No. 1 because it is the leader with viewers 18 to 49 years old - the demographic advertisers want most.

Either way you slice the ratings pie, unquestionably these are the two networks riding highest for the past few seasons. CBS is the model of consistency and stability, building its September-May success on a foundation of rock-solid crime dramas (seven of them in the top 25). Fox is the wild home-stretch sprinter, overcoming miserable falls with a high-octane January-May mix of "American Idol" and stylish dramas ("24," "House").

Their season strategies are as different as their programming philosophies, yet each title holder yearns to borrow a page from the other's playbook. CBS would like more buzz shows that attract younger viewers. And Fox would like to introduce more consistency to its schizophrenic schedule.
