Opening as a -355 favorite, Jordin Sparks has built an even bigger cushion between her and Blake Lewis in the odds department, vying to become the next American Idol.
As of Sunday morning, the oldest established North American facing online bookmaker - Bookmaker.com (see website here) - has made Jordin Sparks a -400 favorite. One would have to risk $4 just to see a $1 profit.
And Sparks is hardly a "lock" to win. Blake Lewis has massive appeal and some would say an even bigger fan base. He's fresh, original and he could even get a lot of the young female fan vote, though that remains to be seen since neither contestant seems necessarily confined to a particular male/female demographic.
"I can see a lot of guys who might otherwise have voted for Katharine McPhee last year voting for Blake Lewis," argues Gambling911.com resident Idol betting expert, Payton O'Brien. "He is fresh and original whereas Sparks embodies the typical 'Idol' pop persona. At the same time, while Lewis is certainly an attractive male, he is not necessarily oozing with sex appeal either. Sparks could spark interest with young girls, a vital Idol demographic."
The good news for bettors is that the heavy betting action on Sparks has prompted Bookmaker.com to make Lewis an even bigger underdog with a more generous payout potential. At press time Lewis had odds of +300 or 3 to 1, meaning that for every $1 bet you could win $3.
