American Idol began it's quest to find the American Idol for 2007 back in January. Thousands upon thousands of people auditioned, but the judges could only pick twenty four to go on to the performance shows. Each week, our votes eliminated two boys and two girls until only twelve contestants, six of each gender, were left and these would be the ones vying for the title. The contestants tackled themes ranging from the Diana Ross Songbook to Bon Jovi and even a few inspirational songs. One by one, ten contestants fell by the wayside until only Blake and Jordin were left. Both had auditioned in Seattle, but only one can be the American Idol. They will both sing three songs apiece: one they have never done before on the show, one that they had done, and the song that will be the victor's single. Let's get on with the show!
By the way, what the hell is Paula wearing? And how many tons of extensions did they pile onto her head?
After winning a coin toss, Blake decides to go first. Thank goodness Ryan didn't do that fake, "coin going down the grates" thing he did in season four. For his first performance, he will be performing a song from his Idol repertoire and what other choice could he make, but "You Give Love A Bad Name?" This was a lightning bolt of a performance because it was incredibly risky, but it worked fantastically and garnered Blake the most attention. He couldn't have made a better choice and while there's nothing new to add, I can safely say he still does it well. This choice makes much more sense than when Jordin chose to sing "I Who Have Nothing" last week.
Randy: gives him a 10 on the beatboxing, but says the singing was just a'right
Paula: thinks he outdid himself, gives him a 10+ for everything
Simon: says he isn't the best singer, but he is the best performer
Jordin sings for the title.
Jordin is next and she's singing a song she hasn't done before. She makes a rather interesting choice by picking Christina Aguilera's "Fighter." I have to admit that Christina is my goddess, especially after the Stripped album came out, and I love her to death so I'm totally fine with a Christina song, but why "Fighter?" I think Jordin would've been AMAZING singing "Beautiful," but then would that be putting her too far into the "balladeer" pigeonhole? So, yeah I can kind of understand why she would pick the song. Her vocals seem a little off to me. Not so far off that you'd call them bad, but they don't seem up to the song and certainly not up to Christina. It's a fun, energetic performance and in the end, it turns out well. Not the best, but good.
Randy: says her voice was stellar, brilliant
Paula: echoes Randy's sentiments
Simon: likes that she chose a younger song, but wasn't as thrilled with the vocals
Simon gives round one to Blake while Randy and Paula call it a tie. I'm with Simon on this one.
Time for round two and Blake's second performance. This time, he's the one singing a never-before-done song and he has chosen Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved." Another Maroon 5 song? This is a good song, despite the stalker-ish lyrics, but it doesn't really fit Blake's voice. Adam Levine, Maroon 5's singer, has a very high pitched singing voice so they work around it and make it work. Blake has a decidedly lower voice, yet he doesn't do anything to make the song work for him. Yes, I know he did "This Love" just last week and yes, I did praise him for it. The difference is that "This Love" is an upbeat song and upbeat songs are more about the performance than the vocals. "She Will Be Loved" is a ballad and ballads are more about the singing. Even though he can't sing as well as Jordin, he can still sing, but this song didn't really do him any favors in my book. It was nice and it fit him stylistically, but it's not as good as his first performance.
Randy: liked the vocals, thought they were natural and pure
Paula: blathers on, but basically says it was great
Simon: thought it was safe, didn't agree with the song choice
