American Idiot -- uh, make that Idol

And speaking of weird juxtapositions: "American Idol," that consummate example of commercial cunning (product placements that are part of the show -- get a load of those Ford music videos, and tonight's big gulp Coca-Cola glasses on the judges' table) now introduces Green Day. To sing John Lennon's "Working Class Hero." What's up with this? Last time I checked, Green Day was blasting the kind of blatant capitalism that "American Idol" cheerfully and lustily embraces.

OK, now we've shifted gears yet again -- Taylor Hicks comes out, sans intro, to do some of those "Uncle Bob's Been in the Home Brew Again" dance moves that became his trademark last year. I can't help but think about how many more CDs last year's premature boot-victim, Chris Daughtry, has sold than "Idol" winner Hicks. And oh no, he didn't say "Soul Patrol" again!

Although Taylor definitely has his fans, as my colleague and our pop music critic, Luciana Lopez discovered when she got an earful (and emailful) from 'em after her less-than-ecstatic response to Hicks' recent concert in Portland.
