Thirty million viewers tuned into Fox’s popular television show “American Idol” Wednesday to see who would be the final two contestants.
But before Melinda Doolittle was booted by voters, leaving Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis to vie for this season’s title next week, the show visited each contestant’s hometown.
When Jordin Sparks entered the gym of her high school in Glendale, Ariz., the background music had a local Anderson connection.
Jeff Hardin, county councilman, plays fiddle for The Rarely Herd, whose song “Arizona” was featured while Sparks greeted fans, friends and family.
“We’re excited,” said Hardin. “The producers from the show contacted Jeff Weaver, who wrote the song, and asked if they could use it. It came out of the clear blue for us.”
Hardin said the song was written several years ago before he entered as a band member.
“Jeff (Weaver, Athens, Ohio) said he wrote the song by just putting his finger on a map,” said Hardin. “It’s quite a good story. He doesn’t really have a connection to Arizona. He just picked a place and wrote a song about it.”
This has paid off.
Hardin said the band hopes to gain more recognition from the segment.
“It’s an honor for our song to be picked by such a prestigious show,” he said. “I hope more recognition comes from them playing the song.”
